Age Range 9-11
The style of this book from a child’s point of view might be very boring but as this is aimed at an older child then it’s not all about the images any more but the information on the pages.
If you look at the style of the front cover of the book you are able to see that they have
Used a detailed font with a very well-drawn presented image of a dragon.
On the front page of the book the main body of the page is filled with text instead of one large image. This is almost the standard look for a book for this age range.
For this age range one of the main things that I will be looking for a clear text to the kid can read and possible enjoy what they are reading. The uses of images for this age range are still appropriate but not so much, and if they are used they are used in a low quantity and of the same style of drawing.
Elmer
Age Range 3-6
For this age range this style of book is almost perfect for them where the image consist of most of the page that the child will be looking at. The use of many colours will also make the child interact with the book easier as it will keep them engaged for longer.
Having an easy to read font for the adult to read and the child might be able to read as well is a must for this age range otherwise how can the adult and child bond over a good book?
With this age range the style of book has to be concentrated on the imagery involved, so lots of it basically. The text is mainly for the adults so they can read to their child and bond with them. The amount of colour to keep the child interested is high but for this age range it’s appropriate.
Animal Babies ABC: An Alphabet Book of Animal Offspring
Age Range Baby/ Toddler
Designing a book for babies and toddlers is one of the harder options to take as the baby needs to understand most of it or just realise what’s on the page. I have chosen the book about as this is what I think works as a babies book. The main point for me is that the baby will be able to learn as well during the book instead of just looking at pictures. This is a way to keep the child involved in the book so there attentions don’t wander off. This book is made up of real images instead of illustrations, this is so the baby has seen these before maybe in the park or somewhere and will recognise the picture and then they will learn to word that goes to that image.
Babies’ books are all about getting the child to learn about their surroundings normally using images and a small amount of text alongside them. This is a proven techniques and the child is learning all the time with words and pictures
Evaluation
The books that I have chosen I think work very well in the age ranges that we had to choose from. The younger the child is the more imagery is used in the book compared with fewer images and more writing the older you go. This seems to be apparent in all children’s books. The choices I have done represent this very well by showing you that images are not always the proper method to get across information to the infant.
