Movie in class of Children’s Picture Books

• Kids use images to understand the book as most are learning to read.

•  Rhyme, rhythm, repetition.

• They are a bonding experience for child and adult.

•   Randolph Caldecott – First to use humour. Made one nursery rhyme in a whole book by using ONE picture for ONE sentence.

•  Published between 1877/1886.

• Thomas the Tank engine was first published in 1942 by Wilbert Awdry.

• The face on the tanks makes Thomas such a successful series, just by using the expression.

• 1949 Enid Blyton – Noddy.

• They weren’t wildly accepted as most of the stories where of naughty things and saying “Sorry…” all the time.

• Brian Wildsmith – His work is a riot of colour and texture. One of the first illustrators to use paint in the books.

•  He wanted his books to not be accurate but messy and full of creativity.

• Pat Hutchins - The book is designed to be a sort of silent movie where very little text compared to the amount of pictures. The pictures tell the story with little text to explain the imagery.

• John Birningham – His books have very little text or stories but makes the reader and the child become together and letting them talk together and make their own assumptions from the illustrations.

• This is making the child talk to the parent and getting them involved with the book.

• Helen A – This book uses no words at all but only images. But done in a way which only children can look at and understand. The parent has to explain a story to them, this a method of having the baby learn about the things around them.
